Churchill Downs Horse Racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky

Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, in Louisville, KY.

Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky has held horse races since 1875 and is the home of the renowned Kentucky Derby. This landmark is widely known as the home to some of the best mint julep, a traditional drink made popular at the Kentucky Derby. This photo was taken in August 2008 on a day when nothing was actually happening at the track, but the clouds coming in over the racetrack give this particular photo a lot of character.

Park Place Hotel in Traverse City, Michigan

The Park Place Hotel in downtown Traverse City, Michigan

After Rose and I left Mackinac Island in October 2012, we stayed for one night at the Park Place Hotel in downtown Traverse City, Michigan. This hotel was constructed in the 1920s and opened around 1930 as a ten story hotel and has remained the tallest building in Traverse City ever since. The hotel was very nice and Rose and I both enjoyed our stay. There are several places to eat within the hotel and the views from the higher level floors are breathtaking if you are facing Grand Traverse Bay. The hotel is also just one block from Front Street in downtown Traverse City as well as the Traverse City State Theater, a historic theater that was restored in the mid-2000s after sitting empty for more than a decade.

Traverse City, Michigan Fall Front Street

Fall in Traverse City, Michigan along Front Street. In this photo, Spice Merchants, Nifty Things and Fustini’s, all of which are great places to shop. Spice Merchants has hundreds of different spices, teas, and more and as a person who loves to cook and eat, to me it’s a must stop destination while in Traverse City. Fustini’s Oils and Vinegars was also amazing and provided the opportunity for us to try many different types of oils and vinaigrettes including pineapple balsamic, ginger and honey, and many others.

City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana – Urban Exploration

The City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana hasn’t held a service since the early 1970s, yet it still stands in the middle of downtown Gary, Indiana. The City Methodist Church has been a focal point of urban exploration in Gary, Indiana for decades. It’s beautiful gothic architecture, interior stone arches and stained glass windows, is truly a site to see. Much of the wood still remains, however nearly all of the metal in the building has long been scavenged by scrappers and the like.

Gary, Indiana is a fascinating place to be as an urbex photographer. There are many buildings that are still standing and in complete disrepair. Be sure to check out my photos of Union Station in Gary as well as photos taken at the former post office and the Palace Theater on Broadway in the heart of downtown Gary.

Palace Theater in Gary, Indiana – Urban Exploration

The ruins of the Palace Theater in Gary, Indiana

The Palace Theater in downtown Gary, Indiana has see it’s heyday. The theater closed in the mid-1970s and still stands today as a symbol of a money-strapped city in decline. Many famous acts have played at the Palace Theater and although many believe the the Jackson 5 once played on the stage, in reality, there is no record of Michael Jackson and his brothers ever having played at the Palace Theater. “Is it You?” – Scene from Somewhere in Time movie

Recreation of the "Is it you" scene from the 1980 film Somewhere in Time

On October 26, 2012, Rose and I drove up to Mackinac Island to stay at the Grand Hotel and attend Somewhere in Time weekend, a weekend of events dedicated to the 1980 romantic film of the same name which was filmed on location at the Grand Hotel in 1979. Fans from all over the country attend this annual event dressed in Edwardian era costumes and gowns, feathered hats and the whole works.

The photo above is a picture of both me and Rose as we recreate one of the most famous scenes in the movie. The scene, known as the “is it you?” scene, is significant because it is when Jane Seymour’s character, Elise McKenna, meets Christopher Reeve’s character, Richard Collier, for the first time. Elise’s first words to Richard are “is it you?” as she gently touches the tree and Richard removes his hat. These are the exact same trees that were used during the filming of the movie. The juxtaposed photo below shows a side-by-side comparison to an actual screen shot from the movie.

The costumes that you see were designed by Tracie Arnold of Past and Present Creations in Brandon, Florida and are nearly exact replicas of the costumes worn in the movie. This photo was taken in October 2012 during Somewhere in Time Weekend 2012 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

This photo is special to me. That is me and my fiance Rose in the photograph. I surprised Rose with a trip to Mackinac Island and these custom made costumes and proposed to her the night before this photo was taken.

View more of my photos from Mackinac Island, including photos of the Grand Hotel, fall photos, and more!

This was a special weekend for us. The night before we took this photo, I proposed to Rose after three years together. I’ll post more about that story later. 😉
