Sample Gates at Indiana University Bloomington

The Sample Gates is the place of the most popular sought after photo on the campus of Indiana University. The Sample Gates are a relatively new addition to the University having been installed in the 1980s. The surrounding buildings were built in the late 19th century and early 20th century with most dating back well over 100 years.

Indiana University Football Tailgating

Tailgating for IU football games on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. Tailgating typically takes place in the fields across 17th Street from the football stadium. Students, alumni, friends and family gather for grilling and drinking, cornhole bags, and good times. This photo was taken during the Fall 2005 IU football season behind McNutt Residence Hall on the north side of campus.

The Sample Gates on the campus of Indiana University. This photo was taken facing west looking down Kirkwood Ave. Decades ago, this pathway was a street that came into the old campus and was one of the original entrances leading to what is known as the ‘old crescent’, a group of the campuses oldest buildings, including Franklin Hall, the Student Building, Maxwell Hall, Rawles Hall, Kirkwood Hall, Lindley Hall and several others.

The Sample Gates at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN

This photo was taken as I visited Bloomington in early August 2014. The Sample Gates were constructed here in the 1980s, replacing what use to be the main road that lead into the old part of campus. This area is featured in one of the scenes from the 1979 movie Breaking Away, which was filmed entirely in Bloomington in and around the Indiana University campus.

This is a bittersweet shot for me because I am a graduate of Indiana University, so Bloomington and the Indiana University campus have a very special place in my heart. Take a look at my Indiana University photos, all of which can be purchased as prints and are collegiate licensed products under license by Indiana University Office of Licensing and Trademarks.

I take as many opportunities as I can to get to Bloomington to photograph the campus. The campus itself is so large that there is an infinite number of possibilities for different angles and perspectives.
